Schedule

NOTE: This schedule is tentative and designed to give students a general idea of the structure of a typical day in the workshop.

First Half: Weeks 1 - 6

The first half of the workshop is devoted to a survey of classical Latin grammar. New material will be introduced by the director in the afternoons; the following morning the first-half instructors will lead the students in review and grammar drills, as well as administer a daily quiz. Exams, which will occur approximately four times during the course of the semester, will preempt the morning drill sessions.

Monday - Thursday:

8:30-9:00 AM             office hours with instructors (optional)

9:00-9:15 AM             grammar quiz
9:15 AM-12 PM          grammar drilling with instructors

1:00-4:00 PM             new grammar instruction with director
4:00-5:00 PM             director's office hours (optional)

Friday:

8:30-9:00 AM             office hours with instructors (optional)

9:00-9:15 AM             grammar quiz
9:15 AM-12 PM          grammar drilling with instructors

1:00-4:00 PM             new grammar instruction with director
4:10-4:45 PM              guest lecture by member of UC Berkeley faculty
4:45-6:00 PM             convivium (post-lecture reception)

Second Half: Weeks 7 - 10

During the second half of the workshop, students will choose two reading courses, one in prose and one in poetry. These are not separate courses from the point of view of registration, so students do not need to decide which two courses they will take until the third or fourth week of class (in time to get their books).

10:00-12:00 AM             Poetry reading session
1:00-3:00 PM             Prose reading session
