About the Greek Workshop
The Berkeley Greek Workshop (Greek 15) is an intensive introductory language course for students with little or no previous experience in Ancient Greek. The Workshop counts for ten units, equivalent to almost three semesters of Berkeley Greek courses during the academic year. For the first six weeks, the course comprises a comprehensive presentation of the grammar and syntax of Attic Greek using Hansen and Quinn's Greek: An Intensive Course. During the second portion, students read original Greek literature in small elective sections. After successfully completing the Berkeley Greek Workshop, students will be ready to tackle third-semester college Attic prose such as Plato or Lysias or, in many cases, an upper-level Greek reading course.

While there are no specific prerequisites, the Workshop demands
serious commitment. Classes meet from approximately 9 AM to 4 PM,
Monday through Friday, and include daily quizzes and intensive drill
sessions each morning as well as weekly exams on Mondays and a
midterm and final following the two segments of the course. Students
are expected to devote several hours each evening to homework and
class preparation. Full attendance and active class participation are
mandatory. It generally proves extremely difficult to take the course
in conjunction with any outside obligations.

M P O S I A
On Friday afternoons throughout the summer, members
of the Berkeley and Stanford Classics faculty deliver lectures on
cultural and literary topics related to Greek and Roman studies.
While attendance is not mandatory, most students find the Friday
afternoon program informative and engaging as it introduces them to
the wide range of subfields in Classics. Following Friday lectures,
we always hold an informal Symposion to relax and socialize after the
busy week. Students of the workshop almost always report that the
experience was worthwhile and positive. The classroom environment is
intense but supportive, and all instructors hold daily office hours
to offer further assistance. We hope to see you in 2012!
