Director: Tom Recht (trecht@berkeley.edu)

Tom completed his PhD in UC Berkeley's Linguistics Department in 2015 with a dissertation on word order in Greek prose. He directed the Summer Latin Workshop in 2015 and 2016, and has taught Greek and Latin at all levels from beginning grammar classes to advanced reading and prose composition, both at UC Berkeley as well as more recently at Stanford. His main interests lie in Greek literature of all genres, prose style, and Indo-European historical linguistics.

The director presents new material in the afternoon sessions during the first six weeks and teaches one prose and one poetry elective in the last four weeks. He is available for office hours each afternoon and is the person to contact with any questions or concerns.

Instructors for the First Part:

Evan Vance (evan.j.vance@berkeley.edu)

Evan Vance is a fourth year Ph.D. student in UC Berkeley’s Graduate Group in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology. He received his B.A. in Classical Languages and Literatures from Dartmouth College in 2013 and his M.A. in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology from UC Berkeley in 2016. Evan studies all periods of Greek history and archaeology, with a particular emphasis on Iron Age and Archaic social history. He has taught beginning Greek at Berkeley and, before coming to Berkeley, tutored students of all ages in Greek and Latin.

Christopher Waldo (cwaldo@berkeley.edu)

Christopher Waldo received his B.A. (Greek and Latin) from the University of Vermont in 2011 and an M.A. (Greek) from the University of California at Berkeley in 2014. His interests are primarily related to Greek Lyric poetry, and he is currently beginning work on a dissertation centered around the authors Pindar and Bacchylides.

The two instructors for the first half of the workshop are responsible for the morning drill sessions during the first six weeks. They will review homework and practice material from the previous day's lesson with the students during these sessions and are available for office hours each day before the drill sessions.

Instructor for the Second Part: Marissa Henry (marissahenry@berkeley.edu)

Marissa Henry is a fourth-year Ph.D. student in Classics at Berkeley and a proud alumna of the Berkeley Greek Workshop. Her research focuses on archaic Greek poetry, especially the Homeric hymns.

The instructor for the second part of the workshop offers one prose and one poetry elective reading course for the final four weeks of the workshop.

Until the Workshop begins, interested parties should generally contact the Director (trecht@berkeley.edu) rather than the other instructors.
