The director presents new material in the afternoon sessions during the first six weeks and teaches one prose and one poetry elective in the last four weeks. He is available for office hours each afternoon and is the person to contact with any questions or concerns.

Instructors for the First Part:

Dan Esses

Dan is a fourth-year PhD student in UC Berkeley’s Classics Department. His main interests lie in Greek literature and philosophy, especially Plato. Currently, he is beginning work on his dissertation, which will explore the relation between cosmology, religion and politics in Plato’s later work. Before joining the Classics program at Berkeley, he received a BA in Classics (Greek specialization) from Vassar College and spent an additional year studying Greek and Latin in the University of Pennsylvania’s Post-Baccalaureate program in Classical Studies. Dan’s teaching experience at Cal includes courses Greek and Latin as well as Greek culture and philosophy.

Christopher Waldo

Christopher is a third-year PhD student in Classics at UC Berkeley. He received his BA in Greek and Latin from the University of Vermont in 2011.  Christopher's research focuses primarily on archaic Greek poetry, especially the lyric poet Pindar.  He has taught courses at Berkeley in Greek Civilization and Latin language, and is very excited to be teaching Greek.

The two instructors for the first half of the workshop are responsible for the morning drill sessions during the first six weeks. They will review homework and practice material from the previous day's lesson with the students during these sessions and are available for office hours each day before the drill sessions.

Instructor for the Second Part:

Justin Boner

Justin is a 5th year PhD student in Classics and a member of the Program in Critical Theory. He studies all aspects of Archaic and Classical Greek literature and culture with special interests in the relay between lyric and epigraphic genres of poetry, aurality in epic, and French Theory.

The instructor for the second part of the workshop offers one prose and one poetry elective reading course for the final four weeks of the workshop.

Until the Workshop begins, interested parties should generally contact the Director (derin.mcleod@berkeley.edu) rather than the other instructors.
